Advice and Advocacy Service

In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of local people coming to us for advice on a wide range of issues, in particular because of the rollout of Universal Credit and an increase in the number of working people who tell us they’re struggling to make ends meet. This trend was further validated by research undertaken by Ascension Community Trust which concluded that the area has a higher than average rate of people accessing benefits, that existing local advice provision is greatly oversubscribed, and that many local advice services are currently unavailable to working people. In July 2019, we therefore launched an advice service for people living in and around Custom House, supported by a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund.

Details of the service are:

  • Hosted at Ascension Church Centre, Baxter Road, London, E16 3HJ

  • Takes place on Monday afternoons from 12pm to 5pm

  • Operates on a drop-in basis and it is open to all, including working people

Trained advisors offer free, confidential and impartial advice and advice and advocacy, with a focus on:

  • Benefits and Universal Credit

  • Housing

  • Employment

  • Assistance with form filling

  • Signposting for people who aren’t sure where to go for help on specific issues, directing them to the best place for support
