The Ascension Seniors Project provides older people with a chance to meet, enjoy social activities including reminiscence, health and fitness exercise and a healthy lunch twice a week. We hold the Communities of Health Award which recognises our work in making a positive difference to the health and lives of our community.
The Ascension Seniors is a brilliant initiative that was first established in 1997, and is aimed at local people aged over 50 years. It aims to empower the elderly, disabled, and lonely providing the opportunities to socialise with each other, and interact with other members of the community.
The aim is achieved by providing a wholesome 3 course meal (taking into account any dietary and multi-cultural needs) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at an affordable price for all local residents over 45 weeks a year. Our fully qualified instructor teaches an exercise class once a week, which can be done from a seated position. In the afternoons we run a variety of social activities and throughout the year a number of events, including our hugely popular Christmas party. Elders are also encouraged to volunteer with many duties, participating in decision-making processes, and providing simple hospitality to some of their peers who may be feeling vulnerable.
